So like I mentioned last week, the Draft was on Thursday. It was a really exciting night with a lot of surprises. The Los Angeles Lakers took guard D’Angelo Russell second overall right in front of the 76ers. Russell was looked at as a perfect fit in Philadelphia, had he fallen to them.Instead, the 76ers drafted Jahlil Okafor. He is a 6’11 center out of Duke University. This is considered an interesting pick for the Sixers, considering they already have two big men and a severe lack of guards. Okafor was considered at a point the best player in the draft. This is why General Manager Sam Hinkie drafted him. Hinkie has always had the ideal that you should draft based on best available player instead of drafting based on need. This puts Philly in an awkward situation with such a full front court.
The 76ers had 5 second round draft picks this year. They traded one of the picks to the New York Knicks for two second round picks to be named later. WIth the other four, the Sixers drafted two American and two international players. These are players that Hinkie believes could be diamonds in the rough like former second rounder and recent world champion Draymond Green . Only time will tell for these picks, however.
Well, its that time of year again. The NBA Draft is upon us. This Thursday night, the best young players in the world will be drafted into the NBA. The Philadelphia 76ers have the 3rd overall pick in the first round, as well as 5 second round picks. There has been a lot of talk as to what the Sixers will do with this pick. The general consensus is that the Sixers draft 6’5 D’angelo Russell, a freshman guard from Ohio State. This seems like the logical move for GM Sam Hinkie in the Sixers, but who knows what will actually go down on draft night with Hinkie’s reputation for the spontaneous. Russell seems like the obvious choice for the number 3 pick because of the last two year’s picks, Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid, both being big men. However, Joel Embiid’s health has been a concern as of late. Does this mean the SIxers should draft 7’1 European star and mystery man Kristaps Porzingis? Porzingis has been flying up draft boards recently and has been projected as high as the 2nd overall pick by some experts. The question is, who will be available when it is Philadelphia’s turn to be on the clock? THat very much depends on what the Lakers do with the second overall pick. Recent rumors have them pegged to trade down in order to receive Demarcus Cousins from the Kings. This is the beauty of draft day, with only hours to go until the first selection, not a soul in the world knows exactly how it will all unfold.
